I am intrigued by the interplay between spirituality and religion in society today. Fifty years ago most people would have equated the two terms, but that is definitely not true today. Many, many people pursue spiritual paths who want nothing to do with traditional organized religion. I respect that, and I understand it to a degree, but I would like to know more. I would love to hear from others in this community. What is your take on religion and spirituality or religion vs. spirituality? Looking forward to what you have to say.

Peace,
Jean

Hi Jean,

From my perspective religion is often practiced on the outside of the heart...a set of rules perceived as the religion done without meaning from the heart... Spirituality is inhaling the spiritual life within the faith to live life and connect with the faith that the Creator sits in our hearts and asks us to listen to the urgings to live with a sense of his demonstrated compassion, listening to the wisdom of the precepts of religious foundations and taking them in to live by... Faith predicates spirituality...not religious practice that fades once stepping outside of the outward appearance of rules to attend, partake in practices that do not have meaning to the heart... you see, for some the practice of communion is merely a ritual (that is religious)...for others the practice of communion becomes a tangible connection to God to share a meaningful understanding of wisdom and renewal of the inner spirit to live compassionately and to share the best of ourselves with others... Spirituality opens the doors of discovering the Creator's wisdom in a variety of faiths and the discovery that the Creator's Wisdom is available in many contexts...Maralene

Spirituality has a base of religion. Not one religion over another. Because Spirituality comes from all of them in one form or another. Religion has more prayer in communating with God/Jesus Christ. To communicate with the Spirits you mainly meditate or they come to you in your dreams. Angels are part of this Spirituality & Religion aspect of faith. The Angels bring us closer to God & the Spirituality of reasoning behind the subject of Religion. As I'm a Christian that follows the love Jesus with help of Spirits of the Dead to bring the closer to Him & help me figure out my future. It takes faith to do this. This's why I believe Religion & Spirituality intertwine as one not as two. Annie54

Spirituality and religion are two different subjects. Religion is surrounded with certain type of boundries but spirituality is
a open space. It look like a sea,and every individual have to dive in it and search the most precious pearl for his rest
for ever. Being Christian I do not link religion with spirituality. Spirituality is a phase of flying comfortably in the sky without any fear.

faith, i believe in the Golden verse of Bible John 3:16,"for God so loved the world the world that He gave His only begotten Son,that whoever believe in Him should not perish but have everlasting life," means by our faith in God we attain the eternal life. As also written in Romans 10:17,So then FAITH comes by hearing ,and hearing by the word of God.We or anybody has not seen God but by hearing His sweet voice by His annointed people we keep our faith alive ,FOR,Revelation2:10 "Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer . Indeed ,the devil is about to throw some of you into prison ,that you may be tested ,and you will have tribulation ten days ,Be faithful until death, and I will give you the CROWN OF LIFE.

Samuel....I believe God brought Parkinson's and joined me with Patientslikeme.com so I could minister to the sick in my oun one on one fashion. I have spent many a long night on the phone to someone in NYC or CA. or other places. The pain is there and we pray or talk or cry together until the pain is less and they know I understand I have been there the same as they are experiencing. It is an awesome ministry I am in just me and God and the net and the phone...Just awesome.....Pokie

I have thought all day on last nights post. Do I have religion or spirituality? Yes there is a difference and I would put me in the spirituality bracket. I have trouble with the formality of church and I often become offended by the constant asking for money. Maybe structure is what I am backing away from yet you will never find a more religoious person in your searches. I would give til I had no more and never miss it. As I have said before when I literally pull myself upright in bed in the morning my first words are, "What today Lord?" Some of the things he has lead me too I would have never thought of in a life time. Along His way on this jouney pennies are the sign that I read the sign right. Believe me that from no where in the mosrt unlikely place will be a penny maybe twenty or thirty years old but yet very shiny except for the last one very old battered and beaten......how apropriate just like me. You know where it was? In the parking lot of the hospital in my home town. I was going in to convince them to let me start a support group for Parkinson and MS patients....a very good sign it will go well.......rambling again.......POKIE

This topic is dear to my heart. I have tried several organized denominations over the years. I have found them to be sincere, and genuine paths to God. But unfortunately I also found them riddled with dogma, and man's additional ideas. There were layers of rules and regulations not all of which were scriptural. I felt like a round peg being forced into a square hole.

I have studied the bible extensively and in great depth and detail for many years. I have found wisdom, truth, advice, God, and of course Jesus. I have yet to find an organized denomniation that in my opinion follows the teachings of Jesus 100%.:(

Religion is built on ritual and laws. Yes we all say that belief in the saving grace of Jesus is all that is required, BUT, we judge our fellow beings as if the bible ended at the old testament. I feel like a hypocrite when during a service the pastor will point out the sinful behaviour of others, always others.

Spirituality to me is following my heart, soul, and mind in pursuit of love, compassion, and God, based on my understanding through sincere prayer, study, and meditation.

As I have posted elsewhere, I am not a member of any religion, though I have respect for most. For me the path is Jesus, but not Christianity. I also find truth and the path in Theravada Buddhism, and Vedanta Hinduism, yet I am a member of none.

Jesus and Buddha made it very simple: have love and compassion for all beings.:):D

I think for the time being religion to me will be the ability to speak the bible and quote verses from memory, the black and white written in stone things. Where spirituality will be the true things from the heart that helps someone have a better day and just generally makes the world a better place. My spirituality is a very comfortable home to return to after a hectic day. Spirituality is a shelter from the storm and a friend like no other....thank you for granting me respect for religion and and peace in my spirituality love pokie
