Please help us find the earliest use of the quotation:

"A bird does sing because it has an answer,
it sings because it has a song."

We've seen it as written above, attributed to Maya Angelou.

One reader has also told us a variation has been used for a long time by Anthony de Mello.

If you have a book or tape or article that features this quote, or some variation, please post the information here.

In Friday's newsletter, "a bird sings because it has a song" is attributed to Maya Angelou. It is my understanding that it was first said by the Jesuit Anthony de Mello. I heard him say it many years ago in a conference. Also in his tapes he uses it.
